Obama and Jesus Equal

By Jennifer LeClaire

Whether you have a teenager in your home or just see them in the malls, it’s clear that the likes and dislikes of this age group are making an impact on America’s cultural identity. But where do role models come into play? That’s the subject of a new Barna study.

Barna reports that the role models are important because they influence the shape and substance of the next generation of churchgoers, consumers and citizens. The research group set out to determine who 13- to 17-year-olds admire most, other than their parents.

Despite excluding parents, Barna reveals that 37 percent of teens named other family members. Meanwhile, 11 percent mentioned teachers and coaches, 9 percent named friends, and a mere 6 percent named pastors or other religious leaders they know personally.

Moving beyond personal connections, Barna found that entertainers (including musicians and actors) were named by 6% of teens, followed by sports heroes (5%), political leaders (4%), faith leaders (4%), business leaders (1%), authors (1%), science and medical professionals (1%), other artists (1%), and members of the military (1%).

The high-profile leaders most commonly named were President Obama (3%) and Jesus Christ (3%). Tyra Banks, Rob Dyrdrek, Lady Gaga, Demi Lovato, Paul McCartney, Taylor Swift, Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey were among the celebrities named. The only athletes who earned multiple mentions were LeBron James, Peyton Manning, Michael Phelps, Mike Tyson and David Wright. Others mentioned were Mahatma Gandhi, the Pope, Walt Disney, Bill Gates, and Martin Luther King, Jr.

The reasons for admiring these folks? It boiled down to personality and inspiration. Barna reports that the most common reasons teens admired President Obama were his hard work and self-confidence. Jesus connects with teens because of his concern for others and being an example to follow.

Fundie Friday – part 20

Zack —  January 28, 2011 — 1 Comment

It’s Friday, Fundie Friday to be exact, and that means the weekend is only a few hours away. You could work hard for those next few hours and let the time drag on and on, or you could do what real American workers do and get distracted!

If you are a real American worker and in need of a good distraction, then look no further than The Grim Reaper a 1976 Christian fright fest about the Anti-Christ and his partner the Grim Reaper starring none other than Jerry Falwell and a dark haired Jack Van Impe!!

Like all good Christian propaganda it was filmed in the Christian Mecca, my hometown: Nashville, TN. So you know it’s gonna be good.

It’s a 6 parter. Part 1 is below and we’ve included the links to the rest of it underneath so that you can have as much or as little of a work distraction as you need.

Ted Haggard Hot Tub

I’m not one to pick on a man when he’s down, but when you take a picture like this you’re inviting some sort of response. Then again, if you’re featured in GQ and you have a reality TV show are you really that down?

Here’s the link to the GQ interview he gave in case you want to read it. And just for fun here’s what the same picture would look like if Craig Robinson from The Office and Hot Tub Time Machine had been there for the photo shoot.

Porn Sunday

Most of you have probably heard of XXXChurch.com.   If you haven’t, it is basically a Christian ministry to help men (and women) deal with addiction to pornography.  They go out of their way to try to address an issue that is serious, yet embarrassing to talk about.

Apparently, they are declaring February 6, 2011 (Super Bowl Sunday) as Porn Sunday.  The goal is to try to get church people to talk about the issue openly and honestly instead of keeping it the “elephant in the pew.”  From the website:

On February 6, 2011 millions of people will watch the biggest football game on Sunday afternoon. It’s time to confront the elephant in the pew. Join with over 300 churches on 5 continents to tackle this issue on February 6th.

We are opening up registration to Churches and to Individuals that want to throw “Porn Sunday Pre-Game” Parties. If you are the pastor of a church or an individual that is willing to organize a house party at your home. Sign up below!

If nothing else, you could register your church and change your sign to say “PORN SUNDAY” as a push for new visitors.

The Church of Kardashian

The Church of Kardashians

By ANDREA MAGRATH

They’ve conquered clothing, fragrance, books and reality television, and now the Kardashian have created their own church.

Speaking to Piers Morgan, Kim Kardashian has revealed how she funded a church set up last year in Calabasas by her mother Kris Jenner.

The revelation came after Morgan asked the reality star if she knew how much she was worth, to which Kim replied: ‘Whatever it is, I give 10 per cent away to the church and that’s what I was taught. Every year. Absolutely.’

Tract Tuesday- part 15

Wes —  January 25, 2011 — 2 Comments

This week’s edition of Tract Tuesday is a combination of the things that we love most about Chick Tracts.  First, this is an entry in Jack Chick’s “Adapted for Black Audiences” collection- which is always fun.  Secondly, there’s a bad guy displaying the “Haw Haw” laugh.  Finally, this one ends with a twist that M. Night Shyamalan would envy.  Enjoy!

(As always, special thanks to the good people at Chick Publishing for all their hard work in putting this tract together.)

Misguided

If you’ve been looking to add some interpretive dance to your Sunday morning service and the lady we featured a few months ago is booked, then look no further than “Slim Jim”.

He’s the best pantyhose mask and track suit wearing, breakdancing interpretive dance evangelist you will ever see.

Here he breaks down the gospel for us with the appropriately named song “Misguided.”

Pew Haul

Do you struggle inviting your friends and neighbors to church?

Then, maybe you should enlist the services of “Pew-Haul”….

*Kudos to Community Christian Church for its good sense of humor.

In Dallas, a youth pastor is incorporating football into his church services.   My favorite part of the news article is the excessive use of football/faith metaphors, like the following:

“And the playbook is your Bible,”

“And as a receiver, you have to receive the blessings from the Lord,”

“In life, sometimes you’ll need a Hail Mary; a break when you feel blitzed; and the freedom to celebrate when victory comes your way.”

I’d like to offer up some football/faith metaphors of my own.  Feel free to use these in your own sermons.

” As a running back for Jesus, we have to carry the gospel to the endzone of unbelievers!”

” Don’t let Satan’s blitz package get you down!”

“Don’t let anyone near your tight end!” (For teenage girls)

Fundie Friday – part 19

Zack —  January 21, 2011 — 3 Comments

So apparently if you’re a fundamentalist Christian and you want a “relevant” way to communicate your message you turn to computer animation. We saw it in abundance yesterday with the prophecy videos and we see it again today for Fundie Friday.

This time we’re learning about “evilution”. That’s not a typo, at least not on my part. That’s how they spell it in the video.

As all “good” creationist presentations go this one begins with the premise that evolutionary theory is intrinsically evil. Then a bunch of scientific facts are “debunked”, not by opposing “facts” but rhetoric. This video in particular doen’t even bother to venture into the world of pseud0-science. It just declares that thingslike radio carbon dating aren’t true. Or my personal favorite: if you believe we evolved from apes then you have to believe we also evolved from rocks.

Apparently all you need to do anymore is declare that something is or isn’t true and it is. No need to back your statements up with messy things like “facts” and “evidence”. At least that’s what I’ve learned from TV and the internet.

The video ends as all good scientific discussions do with a salvation pitch.

Enjoy.
