Archives For May 2011

Forget awkward skinny white guys and rapping ventriloquits, what the world needs is more rappin’ grannies…..

Wow. Never thought I’d say this, but I actually like something Mark Driscoll said….

I guess you have to be Pentecostal to appreciate this one…..

Christian Rock Is Blasphemy

It’s true because a TV preacher said so.

Sunday Asylum

This post isn’t our normal fare. In fact, it’s a shameless plug for a group that Wes and I both work with called House Studio.

They’re a new publishing company that is putting out some great small group curriculum using some of the best theologians in the world.

If you’re a small group leader in need of a fresh and relevant resource, then you check out Sunday Asylum. It’s their latest collaboration with the great Stanley Hauerwas. It’s a look at what it means to be the church in the “occupied territory” of the world.

You can watch a preview of Sunday Asylum below, then go here if you’re interested in finding out more information on this fantastic resource.

Without a doubt, Carman is the king of entertaining Christian music videos. In fact, he was featured in our last Throwback Thursday. Well, he’s going to make two “Throwbacks” in a row, because the following video is too awesome not to have a permanent home here at American Jesus.

In fact, we’re going to go ahead and make that a rule: If you make a Christian video that involves a Western themed bar-room shootout between demons and man, we’re posting that bad boy. Man law.

Ladies and Gentlemen, “Satan Bite the Dust.”

At least that’s the goal of Focus on the Family and TVGuardian.

This little device has been around for a while, but now it appears they have taken the next step in  theological technology by figuring out a way to filter out “religious slurs” from the programs you watch. So, I assume that means Mark Driscoll will be muted every time he appears on TV??

I wonder how they determine what is or is not a religious slur? Maybe they have presets you select from during the setup process?

CHOOSE YOUR RELIGION: Christian/Jewish/Muslim

ARE YOU?: Protestant/Catholic

CHOOSE YOUR THEOLOGICAL TRADITION: Calvinist/Wesleyan/Lutheran/Presbyterian/Non-denominational

WHICH PASTOR BEST DESCRIBES YOU?: Mark Driscoll/Rob Bell/Joel Osteen/Rick Warren

(WARNING: If you select “Mark Driscoll” your television will shut down and be rendered permanently inoperable as all things coming from Hollywood are demonic in nature)

Christians Back TV Device to Censor Religious Slurs, Profanity

By Eryn Sun | Christian Post Correspondent

What if there was a mute button for every single objectionable word mentioned on television?

For parents everywhere, there may finally be an answer.

Focus on the Family is teaming up with TVGuardian to provide clean entertainment choices for families through the TVGuardian filter, a device that eliminates objectionable language from television shows.

Penned as a “foul language filter” for HDTV’s, the device seeks to protect children not only from all foul language, but also from offensive religious slurs, sexual references, and other inappropriate phrases.

“Parents are continuously bombarded with media messages that are at odds with how they are raising their children,” Rich Bennett, vice president of Focus on the Family’s Strategy Office, said in a statement Wednesday.

“Many are at a loss as to how to combat this as technology advances and objectionable entertainment content increases. TVGuardian is an essential resource in helping parents create positive, safe entertainment experiences that affirm their family values.”

Remember these guys?

If not, then you’re in for a real treat.

This time around the Chrisagis Brothers bring us their “Grammy nominated” (really??) song: “Split Second”.

Yes, it is very odd and depressing that they filmed this video in a graveyard. But there is a lot of hope in this song.

And I’m not talking about the second coming of Jesus.

This song boldly declares hope to anyone who’s ever written a song about anything, no matter how awful it was. If these guys can get nominated for a Grammy for this song, then so can you!

Nothing says you love Jesus like getting his name tattooed on your body in the language of a people for whom tattoos were strictly forbidden.

See it right there under his armpit? Isn’t it cute? I’m sure Jesus is honored to have his name tattooed below an armpit.

Here’s the story on the new tattoo in case you feel the need to read it.

My only question is: Does Jesus have a tattoo of Justin Bieber?

I’m a pretty big movie fan and I sort of pride myself on “being in the know” about upcoming releases. However, I hadn’t heard anything about this gem until today. So, stumbling upon it by accident was a real treat.

I don’t know much about it except that it has legitimate Hollywood talent and it’s about one of my favorite subjects: mega-churches.

It sort of looks like Saved mixed with a murder mystery. (Note: If you haven’t seen Saved then you really need to put your life on hold and do so.)

Anyway, this movie looks awesome.

The only thing that’s missing from the trailer is “Based on a True Story.”
